This year marks the 50th anniversary of The Untouchables
starring Robert Stack as tough Treasury agent Eliot Ness,
as he leads a team of incorrupt and honest men against crime
and corruption that is sweeping the Windy City known as
Chicago. The series' third season (28 episodes) has been
spilt into two on DVD -- with "Volume 1" released on August
25 and the upcoming "Volume 2" on November 10. Based on
the real-life exploits of Ness, guest stars in this set
includes future Colombo Peter Falk as "The Troubleshooter"
when the Untouchables sets out to bust a gambling ring,
and plans to expose "The Matt Bass Scheme" developed by
future Kojak Telly Savalas, whose character is up for parole
-- and up to his old tricks.
*** The Untouchables has been criticized for the amount
of onscreen violence, yet they rocked not just the underworld,
but rocked America, as viewers tuned in every week for four
years to see "Crusader cop" Ness and his unit wage war against
Al Capone, Frank Nitti, Dutch Schultz, and several of the
biggest names in organized crime. It was the first of many
for Quinn Martin Productions, who spent the next two decades
creating some of the most popular action, crime/detective
shows on television such as The Fugitive, Cannon, Barnaby
Jones, and The Streets of San Francisco. ***
