Where The Day Takes You is directed by Marc Rocco and
stars Dermot Mulroney, Sean Astin, Balthazar Getty, Lara
Flynn Boyle, Ricki Lake, James LeGros, Laura San Giacomo,
David Arquette, and Christian Slater. The film features
music by Melissa Ethridge. ***
The film follows the lives of teens living on the streets
of Los Angeles. Teens from all walks of life cross each
other's paths on the busy city streets, dealing with a wide
variety of drama and day-to-day trials and tribulations.
***
This is one of those movies that screams out “early
90s movie” from start to finish. The crew tried to make
a down-to-earth portrait of life on the streets in the days
of Generation X - but the end result, ironically, feels
overproduced and glamorizing of the very lifestyle it was
intended to paint a picture of. ***
The film was greatly admired by a number of young people
and critics alike when it first came out, but looking back,
it feels horribly dated despite being less than 20 years
old. If you need a 90s nostalgia fix, you've found the right
movie. If you're looking for an authentic portrait of street
life, take your business elsewhere. ---
Image And Sound:
The good news? The film is finally presented in its
original aspect ratio. The old DVD was a cropped 4:3 transfer,
and it's great to see this classic 1992 film in the intended
aspect ratio. The bad news? The transfer itself still looks
like bad. It's covered in heavy grain and hit with heavy
edge enhancement. The audio doesn't fare any better. I'm
glad this movie finally got reissued, but would it have
killed Anchor Bay to clean it up?
