I'm not going to suggest saying no to yes. Maybe might
be a better option for film fans. “Yes Man” takes Jim Carrey
into familiar territory…all too familiar territory. It’s
as if some one watched Jim Carrey comedies and decided to
use all of the movie as a template for this movie. It’s
not a great movie although it does pretend to be. Carrey
plays a loan officer who gets dragged along to a self help
seminar by a friend (John Michael Higgins). Terrence Bundley
the motivational speaker (Terence Stamp)leading the seminar
changes Carl’s (Carrey) life into a series of “yes” moments
that truly alter his life including a romance with a singer
(Zooey Deschanel). ***
“Yes Man” strikes me as a pitch that sounded funnier
than the actual movie itself. It’s pretty obvious when a
Carrey comedy is running low on inspiration he can become
a bit manic and he does that pretty effortlessly here as
well. Fans that enjoyed “Liar, Liar” will probably enjoy
“Yes Man” which is pretty much the same film redux in many
respects or at least conceptually. ---
Image & Sound:
“Yes Man” looks surprisingly good in a nice Blu-ray
transfer. Skins tones aren’t as accurate as they could be.
Digital artifacts occasionally rear their ugly heads but
over all the film looks pretty good just not outstanding
as I would expect a recently released move. ***
Audio sounds quite good with dialog crisp and clear
and we even get some nice surround effects particularly
during crowd scenes. Just have realistic expectations and
you’ll be pleasantly surprised.

Special
Features: |
The special features are all in high def which is a
nice plus and we do get some BD Live exclusives. ***
“Jim Carrey, Extreme Yes Man” is a standard making
of featurette. “Exclusive! On Set with Danny Wallace” allows
the writer of the film to give a tongue-in-cheek tour of
the set. ***
“Future Sounds: Munchausen by Proxy” focuses on the
band that appears in the film. “Downtime on the Set” allows
Carrey to be silly walking around the set. We also get five
music videos with the band performing. ***
We get deleted scenes, a gag reel and exclusive BD-Live
clips that you can download although I haven’t used this
feature as of yet. ---

Final Words:
|
Revisiting the formula that worked for him in the past
works somewhat for Carrey in “Yes Man”. It’s an enjoyable
if uninspired comedy. I recommend renting before buying
to see if “Yes Man” appeals to you.
