For the uninitiated, let me introduce
you to one of the most powerful and incredible bands on the
planet, Bigelf. From the USA, Bigelf is a quartet playing
a brand of prog rock that incorporates the varied stylings
of the Beatles, Black Sabbath, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd, King
Crimson, etc... into a most unique stew with their own seasonings.
These guys are very dangerous, indeed. In fact, make sure
your speakers can handle enough wattage before unleashing
this disc on your neighbors. One of the things that defines
Bigelf is the fact that they use ALL analog and vintage gear
exclusively. So, expect LOTS of mellotron, Hammond and Moog
synths, de-tuned Gibson Guitars and Orange stacks. They say
that the new gear doesn't suit the needs of the music, and
I have to agree. With a sound unlike any other band on the
planet right now, Bigelf has released their third disc 'Hex',
and their first on a major label, Eastwest (Warner) in Sweden
to start. The States may see a release of 'Hex' in 2004. Like
the US band Echolyn that released their major label debut
on Sony 550 (As The World) in 1995, these guys haven't sacrificed
a bit of their sound for a big-time release. In fact, this
rocks harder and is more 'prog' than their earlier stuff.
Every song has memorable melodies, crushing riffs, and all
the ingredients us prog-heads love, while classic rock enthusiasts
will revel in a retro sound that is not regressive. Standout
tracks include the awesome 'Falling Bombs' and the two part
'Bats in the Belfry'. One of the top prog releases for 2004,
guaranteed. A 10 of 10! (Eric Louis)
