The Review

SLive From London captures IQ live at the Camden Palace in London in 1985. This was filmed not long before singer Peter Nicholls left the band, and most of the material on this disc comes from the then-current album, 'THE WAKE'. Original bassist Tim Esau is here too. Though there's not much here in terms of extras or anything, it's great to see some live footage of the early IQ. The sound quality is decent for what it is, though probably wont impress sound freaks spoiled by modern tampering done with other DVDs. It's just great this footage exists. The lighting looks very 'stagey', live on TV type film. Classic stuff.

This is pre-Subterranea, pre-John Jowitt joining, really 80's looking IQ. In fact in this DVD they look more like a New Romantic outfit- you almost expect them to sound like Orchestral Manouvres In The Dark or something when they come on stage, but dark and dramatic Genesis-y type music comes out instead. At one point Nicholls drops his microphone onto the ground. Guitarist Mike Holmes looks like a punk Anthony Phillips, and Martin Orford has hair. But enough about what they look like, this 80's IQ broadcast is of its period but still offers some timesless tunes. Special mention must be made of 'CORNERS', which is more powerful and anthemic than the studio version found on THE WAKE. Unfortunately, their early epic THE LAST HUMAN GATEWAY is nowhere to be found on this disc, but no matter. I know there's a CD of this DVD in existence as well, called LIVING PROOF. You can't go wrong with anything by this superlative band.
