The Review

This CD is a very pleasurable listen by a band that I have come to know and admire, not only by the members within the band, but also within their work outside the band (most notably with John Wetton and IQ). "Photoplay" is the latest release by Jadis. A four piece band comprised of Gary Chandler (guitar and vocals), Martin Orford (keys), Stephen Christy (drums), and John Jowitt (bass). This CD seems to grow on you the more you listen as is the case with their previous work "Fanatic". In fact this CD almost seems an extension of that CD where they began to show a slightly heavier sound and a new direction. The order of the tracks are nicely placed as each song that follows seems to compliment the one before.

It begins with "There's a Light". A good opener that has some powerful moments and exciting guitar work by Gary. "What Goes Around" is another good track. "Standing Still" is one of my favorite tracks on the CD. There is something about that riff that really sticks in my head. Another favorite track is "Make Me Move" a really great song that has a great dramatic effect. Each track has something interesting and something that captures the attention. There really is not a bad track on the entire CD and I would recommend this CD to anyone familiar with their work or to anyone who enjoys good solid writing and good guitar work within a band that seems to share equal space quite nicely. Apparently this is supposed to be Martin Orford's last CD with them, which will be quite a loss for the band, as he added alot to the textures and overall sound of their work. But most likely he will be replaced by someone of equal talent. Martin probably has his hands full with the recent success of IQ and his work with John Wetton.

Overall I rate this CD with high marks probably 41/2 stars out of five because this CD didn't really knock my socks off, but it did take me on a very enjoyable ride.
