The Review

Get a pen and paper ready. Now write this: Kaipa's new disc "Keyholder" is going to be prog album of the year. Now I can officially say "I told you so". This is not a joke. This might even be one of the best prog-rock albums ever. Frankly, I was a bit disappointed with the 'reunion' disc "Notes From The Past", from 2002. I found the pieces to be a bit common, telegraphic in nature, and the melodies to be a bit weak. But, all has been made up for (and then some, slightly) with the 2003 release "Keyholder". Basically, if you took The Flower Kings circa 'Stardust We Are', and blended Kaipa circa 'Inget Nytt Under Solen', sprinkled a bit of Ritual, and lots of classic prog ala Genesis, Yes and KC, you'd have an idea. But, mark my words when I say that Kaipa does not emulate any of those bands. This is their own deal. Expect TONS of mellotron, foundation rattling bass pedals, expert musicianship, absolutely killer and memorable melodies, and top notch production. Every song is awesome, and different. What is new here is the addition of female vocalist 'Aleena' to the mix, who's voice is a female version of Flower Kings vocalist Hans Froberg. Simply awesome. I'm telling you....if you don't get this disc immediately, you are missing out big time! Better yet...if you're a prog fan, and like this type of prog and DON'T like this disc....you may need a head examination. at least a 10 of 10 (Eric Louis)
