Riverside's music arguably could
be classified in either the Progrock or Progmetal genres because
it sounds like both. I'll give this release a 70% tilt toward
progrock, with 27% metal and 3% death metal. The brief tinges
of death metal are properly overdriven guitars combined with
the primal barking vocal. Although I don't like death metal,
this fact doesn't bother me at all because the feel is short
lived- and if I can say "it somehow comes across as tasteful"
- would that be an oxymoron? Progrockers should not be scared
off one bit.
Having said this about the vocals,
the quality of the Mr. Duda's voice is absolutely superb.
I cannot see how anyone could find anything annoying about
this voice and can't think of anyone in progressive music
with a better one. A huge plus. I can imagine so many bands
wishing for someone like him. And he's a frontman who plays
bass. Not a typical arrangement. Not just a typical band.
So what's the draw? Style. Riverside
reeks of a very strong identity in it's consistent soundscape.
The song structure, instrumentation. flow and style cues are
both intriguing and engaging. There is a distinct flow to
this album and you're never left wondering when a song is
"going to start making sense". Quite easy to follow yet very
much addictive. This is some very heady and intelligent stuff.
And if you're ever in the mood for Pink Floyd, Dire Straits,
or Genesis' Steve Hackett, then maybe Piotr Grudzinski's haunting
guitar lead lines may promptly satisfy you. The dark musical
atmosphere of the whole CD seems painted with sad, beautiful,
or angry strokes, but always in "the style". Sometimes I find
this album simple, sometimes elegant, and sometimes "simply
complex". None of these statements should be read as negative.
I think Riverside has captured their music with wonderful
emotion.
The inevitable comparisons? Yes
I can see Porcupine Tree and Opeth. Although Riverside has
traits of both bands, their compositional reach and execution
on this release extends beyond either.
Riverside MUST be proud of this.
For progrock, progmetal, altrock, metal fans. If you're into
death metal you may like this if you're willing to accept
alot less death, and a bit less metal in your music.
Highly recommended. Grade: A
